The Library maintains spaces for our community that balance a variety of needs, ranging from those studying alone who need to maintain their concentration to those working collaboratively as a group to prepare for an exam or work on a project. We aim to support those varied uses of the library by limiting noise levels to what is considered to be acceptable and reasonable.
Depending on the space, that noise level may range from one of absolute silence to that of quiet group collaboration and considerate conversation.
Space in the library is divided into two areas allowing for differing levels of noise:
Quiet Zones |
Quiet Group Zones |
2nd floor (Engleman Reading Room only)
4th floor
5th floor
|
2nd floor (except Engleman Reading Room)
3rd floor

- No talking (only whispering)
- No phone calls or video calls (Zoom, FaceTime etc.)
- Use headphones/earbuds for any video/audio playing on your devices
|

This noise policy is aligned with the Baruch College Student Code of Conduct. Students who are making an unreasonable amount of noise that violates this noise policy may be asked by Public Safety to leave the library.
What should I do if someone is making too much noise in the library?
Feel free to do any of the following:
- best option: call Public Safety at (646) 660-6000
- speak with the Public Safety officer at the entrance to the library
- ask for help on the library’s online chat service
- remind the person (or people) about the noise policy (there should be signage nearby)
Where can I find the quietest parts of the library?
As per the noise policy, the 4th and 5th floors are designated as our quietest areas (we strive for as much quiet as possible in all areas but have some flexibility for reasonable amounts of noise in the “quiet group zones” on the 2nd and 3rd floors.
There are, though, special study spaces (including rooms that you can reserve in advance) you might want to use.
Can I offer feedback on the noise policy?
Yes! Absolutely!
